The need for biomaterials has increased as the world population ages. Every year approximately 1 million orthopedic devices, generally coated with calcium phosphates for improving biocompatibility and bone tissue growth surrounding them, are implanted in patients worldwide since 2008 [1]. However, significant growth is projected in the United States with an increase to 380 000 hip procedures and over 1 500 000 knee procedures in 2020 [2]. In fact, the demand of orthopedic devices has been connected to their development including the attention on calcium phosphates.
