For the first time in its history, the Texas Library Association reached beyond its state borders to promote reading, literacy, and the value of libraries. By special invitation of the organizers of the Eighth International Book Fair of Monterrey (IBFM), TLA connected with the public of Monterrey, Mexico during the nine day fair, held September 26 to October 4, 1998. With an estimated attendance of over 150,000 people, the fair provided a cultural highlight for the entire state of Nuevo León. The fair, an annual Mecca for book buying and selling, offered TLA a chance to bring attention to the universal need for stronger libraries and to collaborate with librarians and library school students in Mexico.
