It is the purpose of this study to determine by means of field experiments, the response of winter wheat to nitrates developed naturally within the soil, and added artificially at seeding time and at intervals during the growing season. The questions involved are: The adequacy of natural nitrification and the effect thereon of temperature, moisture, soil condition, and common soil amendments like manure and straw. The value of nitrates added artificially and the value of other fertilizers furnished nitrogen. The quantity of artificial nitrates required to supplement natural nitrification and the proper time of application. The course of nitrate absorption of growing wheat. Advisor: J.C. Russe
