This thesis examines the reciprocity negotiations between Canada and the United States looking back as far as the mid 17th century up until the 1911 Reciprocity Pact. The thesis also examines the Elgin Treaty and why it was later repealed. The author researches and examines the 1911 Reciprocity Pact and explores contemporary attitudes towards select sections of the treaty such as organized labor and the overall reaction Canada as a whole had in reaction to the passing of the 1911 reciprocity Pact. The thesis also examines the politics surrounding the reciprocity Pact both from the Canadian perspective and how the Reciprocity Pact of 1911 influenced the careers of prominent political figures such as William Taft and Edward Blake
