A method for the structural characterization of complex mixtures is developed which utilizes elemental analysis, NMR, and other analytical data to determine functional group concentrations. The method is tested with mixtures of known composition and is applied to a set of hydrodesulfurlzed coal liquids. The results are compared with mass spectrometric data and with the results of established methods of structural analysis
