The alpha4beta1 integrin is an essential adhesion molecule for recruitment of circulating lymphocytes into lymphoid organs and peripheral sites of inflammation. Chemokines stimulate alpha4beta1 adhesive activity allowing lymphocyte arrest on endothelium and subsequent diapedesis.
