India, with an extensive coastline of over 6,100 km and an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of above 2 million sq. km, contributes about 46% of the total exploited living resources from the Indian Ocean. The marine fisheries of India are dominated by pelagic fishes like sardines and mackeral, though demersal fishes like butter fish, pomfrets, sciaenids, and more importantly the shrimps, contribute substantially.
