South Kanara District has a number of estuaries but the fisheries resources of these are poorly known. The only published work till date is that of George el. al. (1 959) on the mackerel fisherY of Nethravathi estuary. This becomes all the more significant, since the estuaries are the main sources of fish production during the south-west monsoon period (May to September) when sea fishing operations remain suspende
