Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta (C.), is one of the important pelagic, shoaling marine fishes of our country. Although its distribution is known to extend both on the west and east coasts, the area between Quilon and Ratnagiri on the west coast is the most productive from the mackerel fishery point of view. Compared with the magnitude of the mackerel landings in this sector, the occurrence of the species on the east coast in small quantities is of no significance. However, additional knowledge on the biology of the species from various sections of the coastline should be of considerable value to the proper understanding of the bionomics of the mackerel populations over the entire range of their distribution
