Deep sea snake fishes are common in the coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic, and widespread but rare in the central Indo-Pacific (Smith, 1949). Few of these have been recorded from Indian waters (Day, 1889). Mukkaram collected a specimen of Cepola abbreviata Cuvier [= Acanthocepola abbreviata (Cuvier)] measuring 95 mm total length (Regional centre of C.M.F.R. Institute, Mandapam Camp Reference collection No. 171|471) from the landings along the Orissa coast
