Effectiveness of Preoperative Teaching on Postoperative Outcome among Mothers who Undergo Elective Caesarean Section in Government Headquarters Hospital at Kanchipuram

The present study was conducted to elicit the effectiveness of pre operative teaching on post operative outcome among mothers who undergo elective caesarean section. A total of 60 mothers who met the inclusive criteria had been selected by simple random technique. The objectives of the study was to assess the mothers knowledge regarding post operative care, evaluate the effectiveness of pre operative teaching with post operative outcome and to associate the level of health practice with demographic variables. This section includes three parts, PART – I: Interview technique was used to collect the demographic variables of mothers who had been posted for elective caesarean section. PART – II: Multiple choice questionnaires was used to assess the knowledge of mothers regarding post operative care. PART – III: Observational checklist was used to evaluate the health status of mothers who underwent elective caesarean section. CONCLUSION: The pre operative teaching was effective in reduction of complication of caesarean section and in obtaining adequate health status of the mothers. In experimental group, 16(53.3%) mothers obtained Good health status and 14(46.7%) had obtained Fair health status and in control group, 8(26.7%) mothers obtained Good health status, 8(26.7%) Fair health status and 14(46.7%) Poor health status. Therefore pre operative teaching on post operative outcome have developed a positive attitude which helped the mothers to overcome the complications and early adaptation to maternal role as a parent. So, pre operative teaching should be used to create awareness about the maternal role and to overwhelm the problems which may occur due to caesarean section. The results of the study have got implications on nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: This study would provide insight among the nurses to detect the level of the knowledge, expectations and acceptance of maternal role, health status of both the mother and baby which would guide them to rule out the problems in priority and helps in speedy recovery. Pre operative teaching meets the challenges among nurses for growing autonomy in decision making capacity to render priority based care to the clients at a given movement. The study could apply the knowledge while rendering care to the clients in collaborative manner. The teaching also provides a standard of care or clinical guidelines which could still be individualized for a specific client, depending on how an institution recommends pre operative teaching implementations. NURSING EDUCATION: Interpretation of theory and practice are vital needs and they are important for nursing education. This study would emphasize among learners to develop observational skills and develop systematic assessment to help them to detect the problem and motivate them to render care to the clients. The current trends in the health care delivery system emphasize more on prevention than curative aspect. The study also implies that health personnel have to be properly trained as how to teach the women regarding post operative care. Nursing curriculum should be such that if prepared the prospective nursing student to assist women in hospital and community in all aspects of preventive, promotive and curative care. Since the rate of caesarean section has been increased, the nursing curriculum should include more awareness on complications of caesarean section mortality and morbidity rate. Nurse educators should guide the students in giving care for post operative mothers, which will help them in handling the patients in emergency situation. By the daily assessment practice, the nurse can able to give need based care which reduces the occurrence of complications. NURSING ADMINISTRATION: The health administrator of nursing at the national, state, district, institutional and local level should focus their attention on making the public conscious about the emergence of rising caesarean section rate. She should arrange seminars and symposiums for the nurses working under her in order to highlight the magnitude of the problem among mothers. She should recommend to the superior for the supply of suitable poster, pictures, pamphlets, model, flash card etc can be displayed in the hospital and community centre’s related to various aspects of post operative care. Nursing administrator should co-ordinately work with other health team administrator in planning, implementing and evaluating the health programme related to need and cause of caesarean section and the importance of post operative care at various level. NURSING RESEARCH: The findings of the study help the professional nurse and students to develop inquiry by providing a baseline. The general aspect of the study result can be made by further replication of the study helps the nurse researchers to develop insight in to the development of teaching module and set of information for various aspects of post operative care at various levels. RECOMMENDATIONS: In order to reduce the mortality and morbidity due to caesarean section, the following recommendations are suggested: • Women education should be improved by self help group and could be motivated by nursing personnel as part of the health care services. • Coverage by mass media like doordharshan and news paper to highlight the emergent rate of caesarean section, its health problem and preventive measures in the form of songs, drama, short stories to the general public. • Health education module related to importance of post operative care can be imparted to all the women. Health education about post operative can be imparted to the college students because they are the future care giver
