Self-image and sexuality in breast cancer survivors

According to the "instituto de Medicina Molecular", 1 in 11 women will have breast cancer in her life and it's the cancer with the highest incidence rate in Portugal. Around 1600 women die every year, being the main cause of early death for women. Both the breast cancer and its treatment have a considerable impact on self-image and sexuality, which, consequently, affects the quality of life. Self-image is defined by body image, meaning the way a woman feels about her body and how this affects behavior, and femininity, which means how she feels about her identity as a woman.Method: from the review article “Sexual identity after breast cancer: sexuality, body image, and relationship repercussions” published in 2016, it was done research in PubMed of articles between 2016 and 2018, using the terms: “breast neoplasms”, “breast cancer”, “body image”, “self-image” e “sexuality”. 79 articles were obtained, of which 20 were selected for this review.Discussion: both self-image, namely body image and femininity, and sexuality are negatively affected by the diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. Even though there is no complete consensus, age and type and treatment are some of the factors that have the most influence in both those parameters. Conclusion: because there is no consensus, more studies are required, specifically to evaluate the effect in a long term. It is important that these women are accompanied from a medical, social and psychological standpoint, emphasizing the personalization of those to avoid generalizations.Introdução: o cancro da mama é a patologia maligna mais frequente em mulheres. De acordo com o instituto de Medicina Molecular, 1 em 11 mulheres irá ter cancro da mama ao longo da sua vida e é o cancro com maior taxa de incidência em Portugal. Cerca de 1600 mulheres morrem todos os anos, sendo a principal causa de morte precoce em mulheres. Tanto a patologia como o seu tratamento têm impacto considerável na autoimagem e sexualidade, o que consequentemente afeta a qualidade de vida. Autoimagem consiste em imagem corporal, ou seja, como a mulher se sente e o que pensa em relação ao seu corpo e comportamento, e feminilidade, como a mulher se sente em relação à sua identidade enquanto mulher.Método: a partir de um artigo de revisão, “Sexual identity after breast cancer: sexuality, body image, and relationship repercussions” publicado em 2016, foi feita pesquisa na PubMed de artigos entre 2016 e 2018, utilizando os seguintes termos: “breast neoplasms”, “breast cancer”, “body image”, “self-image” e “sexuality”. Obtiveram-se 79 artigos, dos quais foram selecionados para esta revisão 20. Discussão: tanto a autoimagem, nomeadamente, imagem corporal e feminilidade são afetados negativamente pelo cancro da mama e seu tratamento, bem como a sexualidade. Apesar de não haver completo consenso, a idade e o tipo de tratamento são dos fatores que têm mais influência nestes parâmetros. Conclusão: como ainda não há consenso, são necessários mais estudos, nomeadamente a longo prazo. É importante que estas mulheres receberem acompanhamento médico, social e psicológico, salientando-se a personalização dos mesmos para evitar generalizações
