A cognitive style represents one’s preferred way of processing information. This concept received a lot of attention since its introduction. We reason that this attention is based on the promises cognitive styles offer. They promise a better understanding of individual-situation fit and, by doing so, to transcend hierarchical assumptions of intelligence. However, it seems that cognitive styles became victims of their promises. The field of research quickly scattered leaving methodological challenges unanswered. Through the analysis of literature and the reproduction of literature results, the first part of this thesis raises again these methodological challenges.
