This article-based dissertation investigates the evolution of various predator-prey interactions through mathematical modelling. It utilises a 'mechanistic' approach to modelling by deriving ecological population equations from elemental individual interactions. The dissertation demonstrates how this approach to modelling can reveal novel and simple explanations for complex ecological and evolutionary phenomena. Among several other topics, this thesis studies the coevolution of predator's cannibalism and prey's defence mechanisms, such as refuge use and counter-attacks against younger predators. Using the theoretical frameworks of adaptive dynamics and bifurcation analysis, we find several intriguing ecological and evolutionary outcomes....
