Conventional Von Neumann machines inherently separate the processing units from the memory units. This architecture thus requires that data is transferred from the memory units to the processing units for performing computation, and results that should be stored are required to be transferred back to the memory units. Fast technological advances for processing speed have led to processors out-growing the speed at which data can be retrieved from the memory, meaning the bandwidth between the memory and the processor starts to bottleneck the system.
