THE RESEARCH ON LEARNING STYLES OF LISTENING BY STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Listening skill is an ability that must be mastered by students in the first stage in learning language. By having listening skill, the students are able to easy communication with other people. Therefore, the appropriate learning style also plays an influential role in achieving success in mastering listening skills. This research aims to investigate the students learning styles to improve their listening skills. In this research used descriptive qualitative design. The instruments used were questionnaires and interviews. There were 12 students in English Language Education Department (ELED) at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in 2019 academic year completed the questionnaires from 3 classes and 7 of them to be data validation by interview . The research findings showed that there are three learning styles that many students do to improve listening skills, such as auditory learning styles, visual learning styles, and interaction learning style. Therefore, to improve listening skills, students are expected to know the learning styles that are appropriate for each of them
