THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE IN ENGLISH CLASS IN SEVENTH-GRADE AT MTS NEGERI BATU

Small group discussion is a learning process by conducting group with the aim that students have problem solving skills related to learning and also can provide opportunities for shy students an able to speak up in smaller group. The research problems of this study were how the process of the implementation of small group discussion, what are the problems faced by the teacher during small group activities and how does the teacher solve the problems. In this research the researcher used qualitative to analyze the data. The subjects of the research were the seventh grade C students in English class of MTs Negeri Batu. The instruments of this study were observation field notes and interview guide. The result of this study showed that there were three problems in implementation of small group discussion of English class at seventh grade C such as the students difficult to adapt with the group, the students were noisy and group member did not help the group. However, the teacher has several ways to solve the problems such as gave motivation to the students, and organize students if they were noisy, the teacher also gave punishment if the students still noisy so that, the implementation of small group discussion was very helpful for the learning process in seventh grade C students of English class. The students become more active and the classroom atmosphere not monotonous. The students prefer to use the group method rather than doing the task individually
