THE USE OF ENGLISH SONGS IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

One of the important things used to learn English is the media. English song is a complex combination of music and lyrics that can be used to learn English skills. The students can learn to speak and listen from the sound. They can improve the pronunciation and vocabulary from the lyrics inside. This research aimed to analyze students’ use of English songs in learning English and also the students' attitudes toward English songs at the English Language Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. By means of descriptive statistic research design, this current research was conducted. The subjects of this research were the students of the English Language Education Department at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the academic year 2017. The instruments of this research were survey and interview. The research revealed that the students of English Language Education Department think that the use of English songs was very effective. It can be inferred for the research finding that the students use English songs as media for learning English. The students though that by listening to English songs they can improve their skill in English and reported that English songs help them in learning English. The students reported that listening and speaking skills, pronunciation, and also vocabulary improved while listening to English songs. Meanwhile, negative responses have been found about songs in learning grammar in English. Nearly half of the students though that English songs did not improve their grammar in English. They agreed that English songs become good media/tools for learning English and the learning process will be comfortable. They can learn while enjoying the song being played
