The first part of this dissertation serves as an introduction to the current state of electrophilic organoselenium-mediated and -catalyzed reactions of alkenes, as distinguished from other modes of organoselenium reactivity (e.g. Lewis base and peroxoselenenic acid reagents). Special attention is paid to the wealth of diastereoselective selenofunctionalization reactions with chiral, enantioenriched organoselenium electrophiles, as well as the growing field of selenofunctionalization-deselenenylation reactions catalyzed by achiral organoselenium reagents.
