216 pagesIn this thesis, we present a theoretical study of the micromechanics of heterogeneous dispersions. Heterogeneous dispersions are distinguished by their statistical non-uniformity and the presence of one (or more) internal length scale over which the statistical properties of the dispersion vary. At the macroscale, this statistical non-uniformity manifests as flow instabilities, such as shear banding or structure formation during sedimentation, or through experimental measurements of, e.g. viscosity or pressure drop through a pipe, that depend on the size of the experimental apparatus.
