The study of the social ecology of crime traces its origins back to the community studies of Clifford Shaw and Robert McKay in the 1920s and 1930s. They based their model on Burgess's theory of the growth of cities in concentric zones around central business areas. Shaw and McKay found evidence that social disorganization predicted higher crime rates and that these areas of disorganization that they suggested were related to Durkheim's theory of anomie. Later researchers attributed the earlier findings to economic conditions (Bursik, 1984).
