Rapid prototyping or freeform fabrication has become one of the fastest growing new technologies since its introduction in 1986. These prototypes are fabricated freeform directly from computer aided design (CAD) files without the use of molds. 'Stereolithography' was one of the first rapid prototyping technologies. This technique involves the polymerization of liquid monomers from exposure to ultraviolet radiation from a laser. With a stereolithography machine (SLA), a three-dimensional part or prototype is fabricated in a layer by layer process.
