This dissertation analyzes cross-cultural encounters between indigenous and intrusive societies along Lake Michigan's eastern and southern shores. The primary focus is on the St. Joseph River valley, which was the principal fur-trade portage from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi. The French and British vied for control of this river valley; the Potawatomi and French became allies. An analysis of the St. Joseph Baptismal Register, kept by the Jesuits from 1720 to 1773, shows the evolution of a metis society. Intermarriage between French and Native Americans cemented their alliance and fostered demographic stability. The metis served as intercultural mediators. They kept Catholicism alive despite Jesuit demise and helped negotiate treaty...
