The Relationship Between Perceived Social Support and Health-Related Quality of Life and Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Health and quality of life become extremely intertwined after the diagnosis of a chronic medical condition. Individuals adjusting to life after a devastating diagnosis encounter many disease-related obstacles that influence not only their physical health but also their mental, social, and emotional health. The purpose of this study is (1) to examine the mental, social, and physical dimensions of health-related quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease whose treatment plans include educational and/or psychological support, and (2) to determine the impact of educational and psychological support on the degree of depressive and anxiety symptoms reported by patients with IBD. The study will collect data from face-to-face and mailed questionnaires completed by patients 14 years of age and older being treated for inflammatory bowel disease at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In order to observe the characteristics of the continuous variables being measured, the descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, correlation, and regression will be used. Categorical variables will be analyzed using chi square, frequency, and percentages.
