This research represents a continuation of a project to assess the suitability of the microstructures for use in nickel-metal hydride batteries. This technology shows great promise in automotive applications, and has already found wide use in small consumer electronics, including laptop computers. Novel anodes in these cells, constructed from substrates of highly porous, sinter-bonded networks of nickel-coated, fine-gauge carbon or polymer fibers, have greatly reduced cell weights, and thus have increased battery efficiency. These fibrous substrates are impregnated with an active material, which is consumed and replenished during the electrochemical reaction in the cell.
