In his theory of psychosocial development, Erikson (1950/1963) defined generativity as a concern for the welfare of future generations. Generativity can be manifested through the transmission of cultural or technical skills, through the creation of physical or ideological products that outlast the creator, or through the care and nurturance of other people--especially members of the next generation. This dissertation introduces two new measures of generativity and applies them in a longitudinal sample of educated women at midlife. Generativity realization is assessed using items from the California Q-Set (CAQ) (Block, 1978), while generativity motivation is assessed using standard Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) techniques.
