This dissertation uses the Eccles' et al. (1983) expectancy-value model to explore the ways in which gender-role beliefs may influence achievement-related choices through their impact on self-concepts of ability, values, and expectations. The hypotheses propose that gender-role beliefs influence self-concepts, values, and expectancies for adult roles, which, in turn, influence achievement-related choices. Four sets of models are tested in the areas of: math/physical science, English, nurturance, and beliefs about the appropriate roles of women in the workforce and the home (traditionality).
