Beginning with Clarence Cameron White's 1927 Triumphal March , this study surveys some seventy years of concert band composition by African-American composers. The study ranges chronologically from 1927 to 1998. There are band compositions by leading African-American composers, including William Grant Still, Ulysses Kay, Roger Dickerson, Hale Smith, T. J. Anderson, Adolphus Hailstork, and Ed Bland. There are jazz compositions by Oliver Nelson, Willie Ruff, Melba Liston, and Carman Moore. Regional composers are represented in the study with unpublished or self-published band compositions.
