This dissertation presents the measurement principles, theoretical analysis and experimental results of a number of new laser optical measurement systems and the application of these systems to the on-line error compensation of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). It can be divided into two parts comprising six papers. The first part, including the first two papers (Chapters 2 and 3), investigates the feasibility of the concept of on-line error compensation of CMMs. A multi-degree-of-freedom measurement system (MDFM System) was developed based on the principles of laser alignment and autocollimation, which can simultaneously measure five error components of each axis of a CMM with an accuracy of better than 1 $\mu$m for straightness mea...
