The backlog of deferred maintenance for America's college and university buildings was estimated in 1992 to exceed $60 billion. This backlog is a crisis that places universities at significant risk of losing stature, quality, and a competitive edge in recruitment, retention, and research. This dissertation provides causal explanations of the crisis through examination of the historical and theoretical contexts within which the crisis developed, and empirical testing using time series data for each building ever constructed or acquired at a representative sample of 13 major research universities, and for university enrollments, university revenue sources, and national economic indicators.
