This study constitutes the first literary interpretation of a neglected sequence of episodes in the second book of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Met. 2. 531-835). The sequence is studied in detail as a coherent whole, and is then placed in the larger context of the poem itself. Throughout, an interest in Ovid's techniques of narrative construction informs the study. Chapter One explores in detail the embedded narrative of the crow at Met. 2. 549-95. The crow's fascination with language and story-telling is documented, and it is suggested that this reflects Ovid's own professional interest in story-telling.
