Designers of database management systems (DBMS) have traditionally focussed on alleviating the disk I/O performance bottleneck. Because of the decreasing price and the increasing capacity of random access memory, systems with large main-memory configurations are becoming more prevalent. As the amount of main memory grows larger, data sets reside in main memory longer, and the disk I/O bottleneck shifts to the main-memory hierarchy. Because of this shift, DBMSs must become aware of the underlying architecture to maximize performance.
