Russian literature and press in Poland between 1918 and 1939.

This dissertation provides a new systematic study of Russian literature and press in Poland between 1918 and 1939. Its main focus is on themes and ideas and their evolution. Russian literature in Poland centered on two major topics: politics and life in exile. Very rarely did some writers break away from this pattern. When they did, the existential and spiritual tones dominated in their works. Russian press in Poland expressed the views and opinions of two separate groups: the Russian emigration (Russians who arrived in Poland after 1918) and the Russian minority (Russians who, prior to 1918, had lived in the territories acquired by Poland in 1921). Despite their differences, these two groups were united by their condemnation of the Bolsheviks. This dissertation presents and is based on materials discovered in the libraries and archives in Warsaw, Poland. A detailed study of more than one hundred of previously unknown or forgotten volumes of poetry and prose and more than fifty newspapers and magazines was the first stage of this project. The organization and selection of the material was the second stage. The analysis of the most important and representative examples was the final stage. This dissertation adds to our knowledge of the phenomenon of Russian literature and press in exile. It restores to our memory many understudied and underappreciated authors and publications.
