This study is an examination of the relationship between the basic compositional materials of a work and its large-scale form. Schoenberg and others have suggested that a composition arises first as a simultaneity, an atemporal, multidimensional idea that includes aspects of thematic construction, harmony, rhythm, and countless other factors. This study explores the notion that in order for this atemporal idea to be linearized across time as a particular work of music, it is activated by an event that occurs on the musical surface.
