A three-dimensional biomechanical model of a human was developed to give a better understanding of the mechanical requirements for performing four dynamic tasks in the seated position. The tasks consisted of cyclic or single-directional movements of a hand-held weight in the sagittal plane. Each task was studied using a combination of mathematical model simulations and experimental measurements in seven subjects. An inverse dynamics formulation was used to calculate reactions at each major body articulation. Five linear optimization schemes were used to predict forces in 64 postural muscles crossing the trunk and lower extremity joints.
