In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson stated a belief of most educated Americans. These words were written at a time when the expansion of slavery in this country was at its greatest. It was a time when Native Americans represented a real danger to lives, property and future plans for westward expansion. These words were written by a man who was a Virginia planter, politician, scientist and a humanitarian. His views on the issues of race, therefore, were complex.
