In recent years, there has been increased pressure to discover and develop novel materials for use in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as ultracapacitors and fuel cells. These materials should be electrically conductive, electrochemically stable, and should possess high surface areas. Recently, early transition metal nitrides have attracted interest due to their high electrical conductivities and high surface areas (up to 220 m2/g). These materials are excellent candidates for electrochemical applications. Work in this dissertation was aimed at determining the utility of these materials by studying their electrochemical and surface properties, as well as by assessing their electrocatalytic activity. Both low and hi...
