Charmed hyperon production in 800 GeV/c proton-proton interactions.

A limit is placed on the cross section of the production of the charmed hyperon, $\Lambda\sb{\rm C}$, in fixed target pp collisions at 800 GeV/c at the Fermilab experiment E743. A hydrogen filled, high resolution bubble chamber, LEBC, was used as the target and vertex detector. The Fermilab Multi-Particle Spectrometer provided tracking and momentum analysis. Two Cherenkov counters and a transition radiation detector were used for particle identification. A minimum bias trigger provided a model-independent data sample of charm decays. A search for the decay mode $\Lambda\sbsp{\rm C}{+}\rightarrow$ pK$\sp-\pi\sp+$ yielded a cross section times the branching ratio for the mode. The reported limit on the cross section is 50 $\mu$b.
