This project explores the question, What does it mean to be a good father? Much of the research on fatherhood deals with fathers in the abstract. That is, it fails to take into account the culturally, historically, and site-specific ways in which fatherhood is understood by everyday men and women. I argue that the context of fatherhood is important to its meaning---even when considering fatherhood within the American middle class. To conduct this research, I created a new research design that I call narrative interviewing, and I supplemented that with ethnographic observations of suburban life in metropolitan St. Louis.
