Chingis talks about the Buddhist school of Karma Kagyu and its connection with the Oirats. According to him, the Oirats first came across Buddhism in the 13th century, after ‘becoming part of the Mongolian super-ethnos’. In 1256, the second Karmapa, who was a mentor to Menke Khan, initiated many people, including Oirats, into Buddhism. In Kalmykia Karma Kagyu was revived following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Lama Ole Nydahl visited Kalmykia in 1993, and the Kalmyk Karma Kagyu organization was registered in the following year. The followers of the school built a stupa in 1991, which was opened by Lopen Tsechu Rinpoche. The 17th Karmapa visited Kalmykia in 2009.Sponsored by Arcadia Fund, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Bal...
