Realizing these targets is limited by an abnormal combustion phenomenon known as engine knock which depends on both fuel’s anti-knock properties and engine’s thermodynamic conditions. Fuel’s knock resistance is conventionally quantified by Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON) that are measured using the Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine under standardized conditions.
