Generating high value products from lignin has been the goal of decades of research attempting to use the abundant byproduct of paper and biofuel production. Lignin’s complex aromatic structure means that it can potentially act as a feedstock for chemicals, fuels, and polymers. Bio-based polymers are a focus of discussion given the increasing concerns over polymer waste and renewability. For these reasons, efforts have been made to develop polymer products using lignin as an additive or a functionalized part of the polymer network.
