Qualitative and quantitative determination of trace compounds in complex samples is critically important in all fields of scientific research. The direct coupling of suitable sample preparation methods and direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) has been shown to be a promising solution to trace analysis of compounds in complex matrices. In Chapter 1, a technical introduction of DART-MS and a review of some of the most common sample preparation techniques in trace analysis are presented.
