This paper describes and assesses the contribution to economic developmentof higher education institutions in Atlantic Canada, the most economicallydepressed region of Canada. It provides a brief overview of the economic circumstances of the region and describes the relevant governance structure that influencethe effectiveness of the higher education institutions in facilitating and enhancingeconomic development within Atlantic Canada. The avenues through which theseinstitutions affect development within the region are considered. In addition, fiveexamples of successes are profiled that may be helpful to other jurisdictions that areconcerned with tapping into the intellectual capital at their institutions to enhancethe economic development ...
