This study aimed to describefamily members’ view of the guidance provided to school-age children undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy treatment, and to discuss the strategies for providing these children with guidance. It is a qualitative and descriptive study, with semistructured interviews held with 10 families of children undergoing chemotherapy treatment in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, in March 2013 – June 2014, using thematic analysis of the information. The data showed that most of the children began chemotherapy treatment without receiving guidance, and that it is the family which is mainly responsible for the guidance.
