The Biblical psalms have been central to western worship since the Middle Ages, when monks focused their devotions on the psalter and the later medieval laity incorporated them into their Books of Hours.¹ Roger Wieck points out that ‘the great armature for most prayers in the Book of Hours is Psalms.
