22He left on the SS 'Mattaram' with Dr. Mapleston and James Hay, intending to enlist in Perth. He married Clara Sabina Levesley, whilst overseas. Leslie and Clara made their home in Western Australia and went on to have 2 daughters Barbara and Phyllis.Owen's unit embarked from Fremantle on board HMAT A63 'Karoola' on 25 June 1915. He was taken on strength in 6th Light Horse in Egypt where he was promoted to Corporal September 1915. He received gun shot wound to the back January 1916 during the Battle of Rafa with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. After being released from hospital he was taken on strength with Imperial School of Instruction where he became a 1st class instructor of the machine gun course. Until Owens transferred to the Australian Flying Corps 24 May 1918 he was stationed at Moascar with the 10th Light Horse after transferring from the 3rd Light Horse where he was promoted to Sergeant. He joined the No. 2 School of Military Aeronautics (SMA) at Oxford as a cadet Flying Officer Pilot graduating 24 December 1918. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant 5 Sqn, 19 December 1918.
