Miriam-Rose Therese Ungunmerr-Baumann

Photograph from Library & Archives NT PH0718/0002Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann has had a long career as an educator in the Northern Territory. She began as a teaching assistant at Kormilda College and rose to become Principal of St Francis Xavier School at Nauiyu, Daly River in 1993. She is committed to ensuring Aboriginal people have the opportunity to become teachers and to run their own schools. As a result she helped establish the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (known as FEPPI). This group was actively involved in the establishment and continuance of several outstation schools under the umbrella of the Daly River School. In 1988, Miriam-Rose gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Deakin University and then earned a Master of Education in 1999. In 2002 she was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Northern Territory University. In 1998 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to Aboriginal education and art. As a highly accomplished professional in the fields of Education, Miriam-Rose was appointed in 2004 to the National Indigenous Council.
