Louisa Cross is known for her work with the Church Missionary Society in Arnhem Land and Groote Island. Cross was educated at Essendon State School, Blinkbonnie Ladies College, and later attended Melbourne University in 1900. Cross travelled to the Roper-River Mission in March 1919 and spent the next 17 years teaching at Roper River and Groote Island. She started a Girl Guide troop amongst the students on Groote Island. She retired on the grounds of ill health in 1937 and returned to Melbourne. At the age of 57 she married Charles Erland Mortensen.
