Jackie Hargreaves

In 1959, Jackie and husband Bill arrived in Darwin from Wollongong. She started working as a barmaid at the Vic Hotel and then Hotel Darwin. Jackie joined the Darwin Turf Club in 1960 and brought the first of eight horses. She took out a trainers licence and had victories with Miss Janina and Zabis. She then opened Jackie's Fruit Supply at Nightcliff. Jackie and Bill decided to buy land in the Daly River area so she could grow fruit, vegetables and lucerne for stock feed. They took out a loan to buy tractors, slashers, harvesters and a bulldozer to clear the land this is when Jackie learnt to drive the machinery, then they separated. Jackie farmed during the dry and got casual work during the wet season. She sold the shop to work on the farm and in 1973 met Laurie McIntosh, who used to service her bulldozer. Jackie sold her farm and went into partnership with Laurie and they bought the Adelaide River Inn in 1973. They also built the Rum Jungle Motor Inn known as' flashest pub' in the scrub which opened on April 1 1988. Jackie was a founding member of the Zonta in Darwin and was president three times. Jackie was also a member various organisations including the Darwin Regional Tourist Association, Batchelor Adelaide River Tourist Development Association and Country Liberal Party's Central Council.
